The struggle

dorahuman
My dog, Dora Mae is a dachshund. Truly. I have papers that say so. She is a glorious example of a great dog. The problem is that Dora thinks she is human.

She tries to follow me into the shower. She follows me around the kitchen, expecting me to share with her the goodies I’m preparing on the kitchen counter which she clearly can not reach. She fusses at me at meal time to “hurry”.

She has a struggle within her to be a human and as her master, I must consistently remind her that she is, after all, a dog.

Recently at a bible study, I was reminded of a similar struggle. God took dirt and breathed life into it to make man. The struggle began. Made from dirt. Life breathed by God. And as a Christian this reality is in me every day.

Living in a flesh suit while God has called me to be different is THE struggle.

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2

Big stuff. What I put in. What I think about. With our culture attacking from all sides, my mind is a battlefield. Choices.

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. Phil 4:6-8

The life of my dog seems so much easier. But oh, the awesome stuff I get to enjoy in my life of learning to trust God as the elevated creature as human transformed to Christian.

Walk for Whisper Dallas 2007

hsteamwfw2
This morning I met a group of awesome women (and a few had their husbands in tow…including mine) for the Dallas National Ovarian Cancer Coalition’s Walk for the Whisper.

Starting near Baylor Grapevine and heading towards downtown, we walked 5K while others like Diane M (from CBC and my friend!) ran the course. Diane, by the way, took home the 2nd place trophy overall. She took home a gorgeous trophy. (Woohoo! Run Diane Run!)

We had a great time walking, talking and sharing life together. If you aren’t familiar with Ovarian Cancer, it is considered the “silent cancer” as the symptoms are vague and when they do present, it is usually very late in the stage of this horrible disease.

I feel particularly passionate about the NOCC and ovarian cancer in general. My life today is radically changed because my mother died of OvCa in 1982. My sister and I had surgery, removing healthy organs as a prophylactic measure, looking to the future with the hopes of knowing our grandchildren. And then, I launched HysterSisters as a result of my experience. It seems to be a natural connection: Hystersisters and NOCC. Next year, I plan on pitching a tent at the event to represent the website.

Thanks to all who made the morning a wonderful event. Special thanks to the Hystersisters team for driving miles to make it extra wonderful. You are awesome women!

Munch a Bunch of Fritos

In 1978 I was 22, married and with a baby boy on my lap. This commercial makes me nostalgic. (And subliminal message: Eat Fritos!)

God’s Car and Thieves

car
My favorite daughter is an awesome young woman. Last month she victoriously paid off her car note, receiving the title in the mail and we celebrated with a dinner out.

On Saturday she experienced the heartbreak of another’s sin. Her car was vandalized, her property damaged. The thieves broke into the car’s window, ripped apart her dashboard, damaged the headliner, and stole her stereo and ipod.

The insurance company sent over a glass company who vacuumed out her car and installed a new side window. While she is awaiting the insurance company’s instructions for repairing the damage and replacing the electronics, she is driving to and from work with her air vents falling out and a hole where her favorite music and speakers used to be.

While its been frustrating for her, she has demonstrated good stuff. Perserverance. Patience. Trust. Humor.

She’s nodded in agreement to a statement her dad made the day she bought it: Its God’s car. Indeed. It is His car. And she is God’s woman.

And we are all enjoying the “justice” and funny notion that the thieves ended up with an ipod with the latest sermon’s of Chuck Swindoll and Tommy Nelson.
